Tuesday, September 16, 2008
Shackles are the metal piece, which is used for connecting links in different ways of rigging systems from boats and ships to industrial crane rigging. They are the U-shaped piece of metal which is secured with the help of pin or bolt across the opening or hinged metal loop secured with the help of a quick release locking pin mechanism.
Types of Shackles
a.) Pin Shackles- Such type of shackles are closed with the pin and is more commonly used in abroad boats.
b.) Threaded Shackles- As the name itself suggests, in threaded shackles, the pin is threaded with one leg of the shackle is tapped. The pin is 'captive' which prevents it from drooping loose.
c.) Snap Shackles- It is one of the fast action fastener which can be implemented single headed. It make use of spring activated locking mechanism for closing the hinged shackle and can be unfastened under the load.
d.) D-shackles- These are narrow shackles with a shape look like a loop of chain. It is one of the most common shackle as most of the other shackle types are its variation.
e.) Twist Shackles- Such shackles are somehow more longer than the average shackles with a 90 degree twist so the top of the loop becomes perpendicular to the pin.
f.) Bow Shackles- Looking like a larger 'O' shape to the loop, such shackle is able to take lots of loads from the different directions without bearing so much side load.
